Young Frankenstein falls short in the comedic department

Young Frankenstein considered an American classic was released December 15, 1974. The title itself allows us to know the movie is in fact Halloween related, and centers the legend of Frankenstein.

The movie starts with Gene Wilder portraying Frederick Frankenstein, an American Professor and doctor trying to prove he is not as insane as believed to be. He lives in his grandfather the great Victor Frankenstein’s shadow and is never truly taken seriously. He ventures to Transylvania and meets his servant Igor (Marty Feldman) and his assistant Inga (Teri Garr).

They travel to the infamous castle seen in most every Frankenstein movie where they meet Frau Blücher the in keep of the castle. As time progresses Gene Wilder comes to accept the legend and works to make life from death on his own!

The Frankenstein or the Creature (Peter Boyle) that results in his experiment is different from any other. Comical, and emotional this Frankenstein puts on a show for the people! This Frankenstein even finds himself a fiery wife (Madeline Kahn) along the way. Still the monsters  fear of fire forces Gene wilder to perform an experiment by which the two share one brain.

Highly decorated with awards of all shapes and sizes, Young Frankenstein was a huge hit in the seventies. It was nominated for multiple awards across many different events. Some include Best writing/ screenplay adapted from other material, Best sound, and Best Horror comedy. Two awards the film won include a golden scroll and a nebula award for best horror film and best dramatic writing.

Rated by both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, Young Frankenstein generally received good reviews. It received a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 8.1 out of 10 on IMDB.

I found the plot dull and the movie difficult to get through. The humor was hit or miss and for me it was a far reach from funny. The jokes were poorly delivered and left dry. I feel that though I understood all the jokes made, they were based toward an older crowd.

Humor has changed and grown as time has progressed, and it may or may not be the funny you are looking for. But it is hard for high school students to relate to the humor and find the movie knock your socks off funny like an older critic.

Gene wilder and Mel Brooke’s fell short when it came to the making of Young Frankenstein. I have heard so many good things about the movie and someone even referred to it as Mel brooks greatest creation. I was expecting more from the both of them. They are two iconic people who have thrived in the movie industry and I was disappointed in what I watched.

Young Frankenstein may not have been my favorite movie, but it has many qualities that are good as well. The film and its quality are based on personal opinion, and there is  no time better than Halloween to figure out your own opinion on a classic Frankenstein movie.
